About this Event

What is it?

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the erection of the Byzantine Catholic Metropolia of Pittsburgh and the Eparchy of Parma, this conference seizes the opportunity to celebrate 50 years of pastoral ministry in the United States and looks creatively toward a dynamic future for preaching in the Byzantine tradition as well as tools for vocational discernment. It will be held June 19-20, 2019 at Holy Spirit Parish in Parma, Ohio.

Sponsored by the Pittsburgh Metropolia’s Intereparchial Vocations Commission, the workshop is open to all priests and deacons of the Metropolitan Church of Pittsburgh as well as other jurisdictions. Seminarians and deacon candidates are also welcome with prior approval from their home eparchy.

Featured speakers include:

Father David Anderson

Fr. Anderson is priest of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Chicago and has served as a parish priest for 35 years. He received his graduate degree from St. Vladimir’s Seminary, where he studied under Father Alexander Schmemann. He is also a published translator of patristic texts and Byzantine liturgical texts. He has presented many classes and conferences on liturgy and the Early Church Fathers in parishes and monasteries throughout the country. He is currently pastor of St. Peter Church in Ukiah, California a 20 year-old mission parish consisting manly of converts.

Fr. David Abernethy

Fr. Abernethy is a priest of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in Pittsburgh. Father David converted to Catholicism in college. He holds master’s degrees in theology and has spent many years studying clinical counseling and psychoanalysis at the Pittsburgh Psychoanalytic Center, where he is an academic candidate. In 1987, the was given the Philokalia; this gift sparked a love for the Desert Fathers and Eastern Spirituality that Father David has developed for more than 30 years. He has a particular interest in the works of St. John Cassian, St. John Climacus and St.Isaac the Syrian. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1994.


$250 which includes food and materials for the workshop.
